How to make a ChatGPT-style conversation screenshot for a tutorial
Tutorials need screenshots that are readable, consistent and free of private details from your own account. Mimicly gives you a ChatGPT-style template where you type the prompt and the reply yourself, so each image shows exactly the wording your lesson explains. Steps
Step 1: Decide what the screenshot has to teach
One screenshot should make one point: the prompt structure, a follow-up question or the shape of a good answer. Trim the reply to the part the reader needs. Long replies shrink to unreadable text on a phone-sized image.
Step 2: Open the ChatGPT-style template
On the web, open the template from this page or pick it under AI Chat in the editor. On iPhone, search Templates for ChatGPT. Claude-, Gemini-, Grok- and Perplexity-style templates work the same way if your tutorial covers another assistant.
Step 3: Set the header details
Fill in the Display name, Conversation title and Model fields. Use a neutral title that matches the lesson, such as “Rewrite an email”, rather than anything from your personal history.
Step 4: Write the prompt and the reply
Edit the sample messages so each one has the right role: the user asks, the assistant answers. On the web, Paste conversation imports a whole script from lines like “Me: …” and “Assistant: …”. The first name in the script becomes the user and the other becomes the assistant, so check the roles in the message list afterwards.
Step 5: Match the look of your tutorial
Choose Light or Dark to match your blog or slides. Turn Frame on for a phone-in-hand look or off for a flat screenshot. On the web, the Show sidebar option gives you a desktop-width layout, which reads better in a wide article. Set the status bar time to something plain, such as 9:41.
Step 6: Export the image
On the web, export a PNG for crisp text or a JPG for a smaller file. Pick the Screen preset for the chat alone or Transparent to drop it onto your own background. Higher resolutions may need Pro. On iPhone, open the Export tab and tap Save as image.
Tips
- Make a series by duplicating the project and changing only the last message, so every screenshot in the lesson has the same header.
- Add arrows and callouts in your slide or image tool after export; the screenshot stays clean for reuse.
- Caption it as an example conversation. Readers trust tutorials that are clear about what is illustrative.
What Mimicly does not do
- Mimicly does not produce or verify AI answers. The reply says whatever you type.
- It does not connect to ChatGPT or any AI account, and it is not affiliated with OpenAI or the other services whose styles it follows.
Questions
Do I need a ChatGPT account or API key?
No. You type both sides of the conversation in Mimicly. No AI account or API key is involved.
Why not just screenshot my own chat?
You can. A mockup is useful when your real chat includes personal history in the sidebar, when you need the same header across a series of images, or when you want to show a shorter, cleaner version of a reply.
Can I turn the conversation into a video instead?
Yes. AI conversation templates support recording. Use Preview to check the pacing, then Record to save an MP4 of the conversation playing out.
Can I show code in the reply?
The reply field accepts the text you paste, and the template supports some text formatting. Keep code samples short so they stay readable at screenshot size, or show longer code in a separate code block in your tutorial.
